Zaid Gadzhiev

Gadzhiev, Zaid Gadzhievich

Born Feb. 20, 1898, in the village of Khunzakh. Soviet Avar poet. National poet of Dagestan. Member of the CPSU since 1924. Born into a poor peasant family.

Gadzhiev’s first collections of poetry were Highland Songs (1931) and Selected Works (1936). In the plays End of the World (1931) and Khaskil’ and Shamil’ (1932) he took a stand against survivals of the past. He is the author of the collections Heroic Songs (1943), Mountain Eagle (1947), Stars Above the Mountains (1950), White Dove (1955), and Blue Screen (1965) and of the novella Red Detachment (1967), He translated the works of A. S. Pushkin, M. Iu. Lermontov, L. N. Tolstoy, and oriental poets into the Avar language. Gadzhiev was awarded four orders and a number of medals.
