Zakataly Preserve

located in the extreme northwestern part of the Azerbaijan SSR. Area, 25,200 hectares (1969). It was created in 1930 for the preservation of the flora and fauna of the southern spurs of the Greater Caucasus. Various vegetation belts are represented at altitudes ranging from 600 to 3,600 m above sea level. The forests are predominantly Iberian oak, beech, and hornbeam, spotted with some elm, linden, ash, chestnut, various species of maple, and walnut. There is subalpine open woodland and alpine meadows. Rare plant species in the area include the English yew and Cauca-sian rhododendron. The preserve is the habitat of the tur, Caucasian deer, chamois, European roe deer, boar, bear, stone and pine martens, Caucasian snowcock, and Caucasian blackgrouse.
