Zalenskii, Viacheslav Rafailovich

 

Born Feb. 9 (21), 1875, in Cheboksary; died July 4, 1923, in Saratov. Russian botanist.

Zalenskii graduated from the University of Kazan in 1897 and became a professor (1916) and then rector (1918) of the Saratov Agricultural Institute; he was also head of the applied botany section at the Saratov Agricultural Station. He substantiated the use of the quantitative method in plant anatomy and was a pioneer researcher in the field of ecological plant physiology. Zalenskii wrote textbooks for intermediate and higher schools.
