Zaloznyi Put
Zaloznyi Put’
an ancient southeastern trade route between Kiev, Periaslavl’, and Kanev and continuing along the watershed between the Dnieper and the Severskii Donets to the upper reaches of the KaFmius River. Its name indicates that the route went “beyond the osiers”(z,a lozy) —that is, beyond the flats in the region of the Dnieper’s bend and the fluvial valleys that were located slightly eastward and over-grown with osiers. The route linked the Dnieper Region with the Sea of Azov, the Black Sea, and Tmutarakan’ and was particularly important for Russia between the eighth and tenth centuries. The Zaloznyi Put’ is mentioned in the 12th-century chronicles.
