Zangezur
Zangezur
the name of a mountain region in the southeastern part of the Armenian SSR (the territory of Gori, Kafan, Megri, and Sisian raions). In ancient times, Zangezur was part of the historical Siunik region. Zangezur was united with Russia by the Gulistan Peace Treaty of 1813.
Zangezur
a mountain range in the Transcaucasian Upland (in the internal part, the Armenian Upland). Zangezur extends in a meridian from the upper Terter and Arpa rivers to the Araks. Length, 130 km; maximum altitude, 3,904 m (Mount Kaputdzhukh). The range is formed primarily from granite and granodiorites. The western slopes are covered with steppe and semidesert vegetation; the eastern slopes (above 800 m) have oak, ash, maple, and hornbeam forests and subalpine meadows. There are copper and molybdenum deposits in the Zangezur Range.
