Zanjan


Zanjan

(zänjän`), city (1991 pop. 254,100), capital of Zanjan prov., NW Iran, on the Zanjan River. It is the trade center for an agricultural region where grain is produced. Manufactures include rugs, metalwork, and milled grain. Zanjan was an area where fighting erupted between local residents and Iranian troops in 1978, just before the Iranian revolution.
