Zarasai

a city and administrative center of Zarasai Raion, Lithuanian SSR. Zarasai is situated between Zarasas, Zarasaitis, and other lakes, on the Daugavpils-Kaunas highway, 18 km northwest of the Turmantas railroad station on the Daugavpils-Vilnius line and 157 km northeast of Vilnius. Major industries include a creamery and a textile and haberdashery factory. Renowned for its picturesque surroundings, it is a popular vacation spot. The museum house of M. Melnikaite is in the city, which has been known since the late 15th century.
