(zhä`tĕts), Ger. Saaz, city (1991 pop. 21,422), NW Czech Republic, in Bohemia. It is a center for agricultural trade. Žatec was founded in the 11th cent. The city was captured and burned by the Swedes in 1639, during the Thirty Years War.Žatec
