Zauditu

Zauditu

Born 1876; died November 1930. Empress of Ethiopia from 1916 to 1930.

Zauditu was enthroned as a result of a palace revolution. Around her were grouped the reactionary circles that were fighting the progressive elements led by Ras Tafari Makonnen (the future Haile Selassie I). In 1928, as a result of the victory of the “Young Ethiopians,” Zauditu lost most of her royal powers, although she remained on the throne.
