Zawadzki, Sylwester

 

Born Oct. 19, 1921, in Warsaw. Polish legal scholar. Member of the Polish United Workers’ Party (PUWP).

Zawadzki has been a professor at the University of Warsaw since 1946. From 1955 to 1967 he was a professor in the Institute of Social Sciences of the Central Committee of the PUWP, subsequently becoming a professor at the Higher School of Social Sciences of the Central Committee of the PUWP. From 1963 to 1968 he was deputy secretary of the Social Sciences Division of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 1954, Zawadzki became assistant editor and in 1967 editor in chief of the journal Panstwo i prawo. Since 1969, he has been the director of the Institute of State Law and Jurisprudence at the University of Warsaw. Zawadzki has worked on problems of the state and of law, as well as of state law. His works include the monographs The Development of Relations Between the People’s Councils and the Working Masses in People’s Poland (1955) and The Welfare State (1964; Russian translation, 1966), as well as over 200 articles and reviews.

He also directed the publication of the 19-volume Problems of the People’s Councils (1970).
