Zebunnisa
Zebunnisa
(also Zeb-un-Nisa; pseudonym, Makhfi). Born 1639, in Delhi; died 1702. Indian Poet.
Zebunnisa was the daughter of the emperor of India, Aurangzeb Alamgir (1658–1707). Zebunnisa, who wrote in Persian, left a poetic legacy of about 4,000 bayts (couplets): ghazals (lyric poems), seven qasidas (odes), five tarjabands, and one mukhammas. She also wrote a commentary to the Koran entitled Beauty of Interpretations (Zibi tafasir). The basic theme of Zebunnisa’s work is the pitiable position of woman, her aspirations and sufferings, her modesty and spiritual nobility. Zebunnisa’s poems are graceful and unaffected.
