Zeddeler, Ludwig

(also, Loggin Ivanovich Zeddeler). Born Oct. 23 (Nov. 3), 1791, in St. Petersburg; died there Feb. 17 (29), 1852. Baron; Russian military writer; lieutenant general.

The son of a counselor of the Austrian embassy, Zeddeler received a military education in Vienna, served in the Austrian Army until 1813, and then accepted Russian service and served in the campaign of 1813–14. He held command and staff positions and took part in the suppression of the Polish uprising of 1830–31. Vice director of the Military Academy from 1832 to 1834, he was appointed director of the Auditors’ School in 1835. Zeddeler is the author of the Journal of the Campaign of 1813 (1825), Survey of the History of the Art of Warfare (vols. 1–2, 1836–43), and Description of the Polish Campaign of 1830–1831 (unpublished). After 1837, Zeddeler was the editor in chief of the 14-volume Military Encyclopedic Dictionary and its Addenda (1837–52), the first Russian military encyclopedia, for which he wrote many articles.
