Zegadlowicz, Emil

Born July 20, 1888, in Bielsk; died Feb. 24, 1941, in Sosnowiec. Polish writer.

Zegadlowicz studied at the Jagiellonian University in Krakoó and at the universities of Vienna and Dresden from 1906 to 1911. His symbolist and expressionist poetry of the 1920’s dealt with religious and mystical themes, reflecting his difficult search for a social ideal. Social themes became increasingly prominent in his works in the 1930’s, for example, the poems Song of Silesia (1933) and A Rainy Day (1936) and the novel The Dead Sea (1939). Zegadłowicz’s last work was House of Cards (1940; published, 1954), a satirical political drama about bourgeois Poland.
