a city in Yugoslavia in the central part of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia-Hercegovina on the Bosna River. Population, 57,000 (1970). The largest metallurgical factory in the country is located there; the city also has light industry and food processing. Brown coal, iron, and manganese are mined in the environs of Zenica.

one of the largest ferrous-metal industrial combines in Yugoslavia. The Zenica combine is located in the city of Zenica (Republic of Bosnia-Hercegovina) on the Bosna River. It developed from a small metallurgical works that opened in 1892. After World War II (1939–45) the works were reconstructed and extended. It has been a combine since 1968, after its amalgamation with two other metallurgical works, mines, and metalworks. The Soviet Union takes part in modernizing and reconstructing the combine, providing it with the necessary equipment and technical documentation. In 1971 the combine employed 24,000. It makes 84 percent of the coke produced in Yugoslavia, about 50 percent of the steel (1 million tons), and a considerable amount of the rolled steel.
