Zenker diverticulum pha·ryn·go·e·soph·a·ge·al di·ver·tic·u·lummost common diverticulum of the esophagus; a pulsion diverticulum developing between the inferior pharyngeal constrictor and the cricopharyngeus muscle. May occur with dysphasia or foul-smelling breath in old people. Zenker diverticulumHerniation of the mucous membrane of the esophagus through a defect in the wall of the esophagus. It is usually located in the posterior hypopharyngeal wall. Small diverticuli are asymptomatic. Large ones trap food and may cause esophageal obstruction, dysphagia, or the regurgitation of food. Treatment is by surgery or endoscopy.
