Zerentui Conspiracy of 1828
an unsuccessful attempt by convicts in the Zerentui Prison in Transbaikalia to organize an armed uprising to gain their freedom. The conspiracy was led by the Decembrist I. I. Sukhinov. The approximately 20 participants in the conspiracy planned to disarm the local garrison, start an uprising in the other mines and factories of the Nerchinsk penal servitude settlement, and go to Chita to free the Decembrists located there. The uprising was planned for May 25 (June 6), 1628, but the conspiracy was betrayed. The main participants, including V. Bocharov, P. Golikov, V. Mikhailov, and F. Morshakov, were shot. The remainder were sentenced to be lashed. Sukhinov, who was sentenced to be shot, committed suicide on the eve of his execution.
