Zerentui Tragedy
an attempted suicide undertaken on Nov. 27 (Dec. 10), 1910, by six political prisoners of the Zerentui Prison in Transbaikalia in protest against their brutal treatment from the prison authorities. One of them, the Socialist Revolutionary E. S. Sazonov, who had been convicted for the assassination of V. K. Plehve, died on November 28 (December 11). The news of the Zerentui Tragedy aroused student disturbances in several cities of Russia. The request for information on the Zerentui Tragedy submitted to the third State Duma by the Social Democratic and Labor fractions on November 29 (December 12) was rejected by the Black Hundred majority of the Duma.
