Zhandr, Andrei Andreevich

Born Feb. 9 (20), 1789; died Jan. 19 (31), 1873, in St. Petersburg. Russian dramatist and translator.

The period of Zhandr’s literary activity lasted from 1811 through 1829. He worked chiefly on translations and adaptations of foreign plays, advocating ideals of patriotism and liberty akin to those of the Decembrists. Together with A. S. Griboedov, he translated in verse Barthe’s comedy Feigned Infidelity. The political tragedy Venceslas by J. Rotrou was Zhandr’s most important translation (1824). Zhandr preserved the authorized manuscript of Woe From Wit (the so-called Zhandr manuscript). He was also active as a theater critic.
