Zhebunevs

Russian revolutionaries and Narodniks (Populists). Sons of a wealthy landowner from Ekaterinoslav Province. All three brothers were in the revolutionary movement of the 1870’s. Nikolai Aleksandrovich was born circa 1847; Vladimir Aleksandrovich was born in 1848 and died June 9 (22), 1915; and Sergei Aleksandrovich was born circa 1849 and died June 10, 1924.

In the early 1870’s, the Zhebenevs were the nucleus of a Narodnik circle in Zürich. They returned to Russia and carried on propaganda among the peasants of Chernigov Province and among workers in Odessa, where they had ties with the F. V. Volkhovskii group. Most of the members of the Zhebenev circle were arrested in 1874. Sergei was exiled to Siberia at the Trial of the 193. Vladimir did revolutionary work in Kharkov, Poltava, Kazan, Saratov, and Odessa. He became a member of the executive committee of the Peoples’ Will after Mar. 1, 1881. He was arrested that year and exiled to Eastern Siberia until 1887. Nikolai went abroad the summer of 1874 and returned to Russia in the mid-1880’s.
