Zheleznogorsk-Ilimskii

 

a city (settlement until 1965) and administrative center of Nizhneilimskii Raion, Irkutsk Oblast, RSFSR. It is situated 16 km from the Him River. It has a railway station (Korshunikha-Angarskaia) on the Taishet-Lena line. Population, 22,000 (1970). The city was established in 1948, at the time of the discovery of a rich iron-ore deposit. In 1967 the Korshunov ore-dressing combine went into operation; the first ore had been obtained in 1965. The city has an evening technicum of mining and metallurgy.
