Zhemchuzhnikov, Lev Mikhailovich
Born Nov. 2 (14), 1828, in the village of Pavlovka, present-day Orel Oblast; died July 24 (June 8), 1912. Russian and Ukrainian graphic artist. Representative of democratic realism. Brother of the poets A. M. and V. M. Zhemchuzhnikov and friend of T. G. Shevchenko.
In 1849, Zhemchuzhnikov began studying at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, where he was influenced by the work of P. A. Fedotov. From 1856 to 1860 he studied etching in Paris. His long visits to the Ukraine between 1852 and 1856 are reflected in truthful portraits of Ukrainian peasants he created in a number of genre paintings, watercolors, and engravings, notably the etching Abandoned (1860) and the series of etchings Picturesque Ukraine (1861–62), conceived as a continuation of T. G. Shevchenko’ s series of the same title.
