Zhivaia Starina

Zhivaia Starina

(Living Past), a journal published by the division of ethnography of the Russian Geographical Society from 1890 to 1916 in St. Petersburg. The journal, a quarterly, played a progressive role in the development of Russian ethnography. Research and materials on folklore and on the ethnology of peoples of Russia and, to a lesser extent, foreign peoples were published. The ethnological articles devoted special attention to the material culture and way of life (descriptions of dwellings, clothing, rituals); the economy of the groups received considerably less attention. InZhivaia Starina, plans for the collection of ethnological materials were given, along with resumes of expeditions. The journal had a large department devoted to criticism and bibliography.
