(Lives of Outstanding People), series of biographies of outstanding figures.

(1) A biographical library published by F. F. Pavlenkov in St. Petersburg from 1890 to 1907. (New editions were published until 1914.) It was the first general collection of biographies in Russian. A total of 198 biographies were published.

(2) A series of biographies published in Moscow since 1933. It was founded on the initiative of M. Gorky and was originally issued by the Zhurgaz-ob”edinenie Publishing House. The series has been published by the Molodaia Gvardiia Publishing House since 1938. More than 500 biographies of political and revolutionary figures, writers, artists, composers, scientists, and scholars had been published by 1971. The basic genre of Zhizn’ zamechatel’nykh liudei is the scholarly and artistic biography.
