Zhuk, Iustin Petrovich

Born in 1887, in the village of Gorodishche, now in Voroshilovgrad Oblast; died Oct. 24, 1919, at Toksovo station, now in Leningrad Oblast. Russian revolutionary figure. Son of a peasant; a worker.

Zhuk was expelled from agricultural school for distributing illegal literature and joined the anarchists. He was arrested in 1909 for his participation in the Revolution of 1905–07. He was sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted to a life term of penal servitude. Zhuk served his sentence in Smolensk prison and Shlissel’burg fortress. He was one of the organizers of the Red Guard in Shlissel’burg after the February revolution of 1917. Zhuk was a delegate to the first Petrograd conference of factory and plant committees, where he supported the Bolsheviks. During the attack by General ludenich’s forces on Petrograd in 1919, Zhuk was a member of the council of the Karelia defense sector and a special delegate of the Petrograd defense committee. He was killed in battle.
