Zhukotin

Zhukotin

(also Dzhuketau), a city in Bulgaria on the Volga, of which only traces have been preserved, near the city of ChistopoF, Tatar ASSR. Arising in the pre-Mongol period, it became one of the richest cities of Bulgaria on the Volga at the time of the Golden Horde, in the late 13th and the 14th centuries. It was destroyed in the first half of the 15th century. Coin treasures and many individual coins have been found on the site of Zhukotin. The so-called Dzhuketau treasure of gold and silver ornaments, which dates from the late 14th century and which was discovered in 1923, attests to the high craftsmanship of Bulgar jewelers.
