Zhukovskii, Valentin Alekseevich

Born Apr. 24 (May 6), 1858, in Voronezh; died Jan. 4 (17), 1918, in St. Petersburg. Russian Iranian scholar; corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1899); professor at the University of St. Petersburg (1889). Zhukovskii is the author of studies on Persian language and literature, folklore, and ethnology and the history of Iran (Persian Grammar, 1889, in German; A Short Grammar of Modern Persian, 1890; both books written with K. G. Zaleman; The Antiquities of the Transcaspian Region: The Ruins of Old Merv, 1894; Examples of Persian Folk Art, 1902). Zhukovskii also wrote several works on Muslim sects and Dervish orders in Iran.
