Zhukovskii, Vladimir Ivanovich

 

Born Feb. 14 (26), 1838, in Ufa; died Feb. 5 (17), 1899, in St. Petersburg. Russian jurist and public figure.

Zhukovskii graduated from the law faculty of the University of St. Petersburg in 1859. He became a judicial investigator in Orenburg Province in 1862 and an assistant public prosecutor of the St. Petersburg District Court in 1870. In 1878 he refused to serve as a prosecutor in the trial of V. I. Zasulich, resigned, and became an attorney-at-law in the St. Petersburg Circuit Court of Appeals. As a lawyer he primarily accepted cases involving civil claims in criminal trials, in which he showed himself to be a talented orator and brilliant polemicist.
