Zhuravlev, Daniil Arsent’evch

Born Dec. 12 (25), 1900, in Baimakskii Zavod, present-day city of Baimak, Bashkir ASSR. Soviet military commander and colonel general of artillery since 1944. Member of the CPSU since 1920. Son of a miner.

Zhuravlev joined the Soviet Army in 1918 and fought in the Civil War. He graduated from the Military-Political School in 1922, from the Sumy Artillery School in 1928, from the advanced training school for officers in 1934, and from the Higher Academic School of the Military Academy of the General Staff in 1950. In the Great Patriotic War, Zhuravlev commanded an air defense corps (June 1941-April 1942), the air defense forces of the Moscow Front (April 1942-October 1943), the Special Moscow Air Defense Army (October 1943-January 1945), and the air defense forces of the Western Front (January 1945–1946). After the war Zhuravlev held command and directing posts in the national air defense forces. Since 1954 he has been in the reserves. Zhuravlev has been awarded the Order of Lenin, five Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of Kutuzov First Class, the Order of the Red Star, and medals.
