Zhurnal Ministerstva Narodnogo Prosveshcheniia
(Journal of the Ministry of Public Education), a monthly journal and the organ of the Ministry of Public Education in Russia. It was published in St. Petersburg from 1834 to 1917. The journal was made up of two parts, one containing official material of the ministry and the other, the unofficial part, including articles on public education, classical philology (also published separately as Collected Articles on Classical Philology), history, and literature. Contributors included such eminent scholars as J. A. Baudouin de Courtenay, F. I. Buslaev, and A. N. Veselovskii. In the section on public education, the most valuable scholarly articles are those from 1860–61, when K. D. Ushinskii edited the journal. From 1837 to 1855 the journal included a section, the first of its kind in Russia, entitled “Index of Newly Published Books,” which initiated government bibliographical registration. In this period it also published ‘‘Information on Noteworthy New Books Published Both Abroad and in Russia.” The journal has separate indexes for its official and unofficial parts.
