Zielona Góra Województwo

an administrative division in Poland, in the Odra basin, bordering on the German Democratic Republic. Area, 14,600 sq km. Population, 882,000 (1970; 57.2 percent urban). The administrative center is Zielona Góra.

The principal industries are machine building, including transport equipment, textile machinery, and electrical equipment (at Zielona Góra, Gorzów Wielkopolski, Nowa Sol) and the manufacture of textiles (in the above cities and near Zary). There are also food-processing plants, wood-products and building-material enterprises, and chemical works (the synthetic fiber factory in Gorzów Wielkopolski). Over 100,000 persons were employed in industry in 1970. Petroleum, natural gas, brown coal, and peat are extracted in small quantities. Another important industry is lumbering (1.3 million cu m of timber in 1970). Forests cover 45.4 percent of the województwo, chiefly the extensive sandy out-wash plain.

Agricultural land accounts for 44.4 percent of the total area, with 32 percent under cultivation. The principal crops are rye (28 percent of the arable land), potatoes (16 percent), wheat (14.5 percent), rape, sugar beets, and flax. In 1970 there were 336,000 head of cattle, including 157,000 cows, 369,000 pigs, 100,000 sheep, and 64,000 horses.
