Zikaras, Juozas

Born Nov. 6 (18), 1881, in the village of Paliukuose, in present-day Panevežy͂s Raion; died Nov. 10, 1944, in Kaunas. Lithuanian sculptor.

Zikaras studied in St. Petersburg at the school of the Society for Promotion of the Arts (1907–10) and in the Academy of Art (1910–16) with G. R. Zaleman and V. A. Beklemyshev. In 1918 he moved to Lithuania. His created realistic portraits (including bas-reliefs); monuments to I. Basanaviȍius (bronze, 1930) and S. Daukantas (bronze, 1924); the Knugnešio statue (bronze, 1928–39) in Kaunas; the tombstone of M. K. Ciurlionis (cement and bronze, 1931) at the Rasu Cemetery in Vilnius; and a number of genre sculptures. Zikaras taught in Kaunas at the Fine Arts School (1928–40) and at the Institute of Applied and Decorative Art (1940–44).
