Ziman, Lev

Born July 12, 1900, in Skopin, present-day Riazan’ Oblast; died Sept. 27, 1956, in Moscow. Soviet economic geographer and cartographer.

After graduating from the Saratov Economic Institute in 1921, Ziman became a professor at the la. M. Sverdlov Communist Institute, Moscow State University, and the Moscow Institute of Foreign Relations. In 1934–37 he was deputy director of the Great Soviet World Atlas and in 1937–41 editor in chief at the Central Geodesic and Cartographic Board. His research dealt primarily with the methodology and methods of economic regionalization in the capitalist countries, with economic cartography, and with theoretical questions of the geography of foreign countries.
