Zimenki Radio Astronomical Observatory

Zimenki Radio Astronomical Observatory

a scientific research institution of the Gorky Radiophysical Institute; founded in 1957 near the village of Zimenki, 30 km from the city of Gorky. Its instruments include two fully steerable 15-m radio telescopes situated 400 m apart (they operate separately or in the interferometer mode); a stationary radio telescope (25 m x 2 m) for receiving radio-frequency radiation in the millimeter (1–4 mm) range; and several other antenna installations for receiving radio-frequency radiation over a wide range of wavelength (from a millimeter to several hundred meters). It also has a standard pulsed ionospheric station. The observatory conducts investigations of the radio-frequency radiation of the sun, moon, and discrete cosmic sources. Systematic investigations are also under way according to the program of the solar patrol, as well as studies on the structure of the principal ionospheric layers and on the propagation and ionospheric absorption of radio waves.
