Zinjanthropusfossil primate whose remains (a skull without the lower jaw) were discovered by the British archaeologist L. Leakey in Olduvai Gorge (Tanzania) in 1959. The skull of Zinjanthropus is massive, with a powerful facial part. The teeth are large, but the canines do not project beyond the other teeth. The size of the brain is 530 cm3. Several structural features of the skull indicate that Zinjanthropus walked upright on two legs. Scientists regard Zinjanthropus, which existed 1,750,000 years ago, as a representative of one of the species of Australopithecus. REFERENCElakimov, V.
