Zivojin Jocic

Jocic, Živojin

Born Oct. 6, 1870, in Paraćin, Yugoslavia; died Jan. 23, 1914, in Belgrade. Organic chemist.

By nationality a Serb, Jocić graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1898 and was retained there. He developed further the ideas of his teacher, A.E. Favorskii, on the mechanism of isomerization of unsaturated hydrocarbons. He produced nonsymmetrical halogen-substituted hydrocarbons, which are easily polymerized and oxydized by free oxygen. He also worked out methods for synthesizing acetylene derivatives and discovered certain new acetylene derivatives which are widely used in technology. In the summer of 1913, Jocić went on vacation to Serbia, where he fell ill and died.
