Ziwiye

an ancient settlement in northwestern Iran, located 45 km east of the city of Saqqez. A treasure of gold, silver, bronze, and ivory objects mostly dating from the seventh century B.C. was found here in 1947. Some of the objects were Assyrian in origin; others were made either in Media or the country of Mana. Lamellate, gold, and bronze belts, inlays of sword sheaths, and a number of other items stylistically resembling the art of the Scythians are of the greatest interest. The finds at Ziwiye help resolve the problem of the appearance of the elements of ancient Oriental art in Scythian culture. The Scythians apparently became familiar with ancient Oriental art during their campaigns in Southwest Asia.
