Zmeiskii Burial Ground

Zmeiskii Burial Ground

a late Alani burial ground of the llth and 12th centuries, located near the stanitsa (large cossack village) of Zmeiskii in the Severnaia Osetiia ASSR. The burial ground consists of hundreds of catacombs—family tombs. Many local and imported articles made of iron, bronze, silver, wood, and clay were discovered at the site during excavations between 1953 and 1959. The burials of the early feudal Alani aristocracy were particularly rich (a gilded saber, remains of luxurious clothing). The materials of the Zmeiskii burial ground indicate a high level of development among the Alani of the Northern Caucasus during the llth and 12th centuries and the existence of extensive ties between the local population and Iran, Transcaucasia, Rus’, and the Arab countries of the Near East. They also testify to the genetic relationships between the Sarmatians and Alani, and the Alani and the modern Ossetians.
