Zyrianovsk

 

a city in Vostochnyi Kazakhstan Oblast, Kazakh SSR. It is located in the Rudnyi Altai, on the banks of the Berezovka River, a left tributary of the Bukhtarma. An 183-km railroad connects Zyrianovsk with Ust’-Kamenogorsk. Population, 55,000 (1971; 16,000, 1939). Zyrianovsk owed its establishment to the exploitation of a complex-ore deposit, discovered in 1791 by a local inhabitant, G. G. Zyrianov. Zyrianovsk has a lead combine, a brewery, a brickyard, a dairy, a clothing factory, and a meat-packing combine. It is the site of a medical school, of the general technical department of the Ust’-Kamenogorsk Road Engineering Institute, and of a branch of the Leninogorsk Mining and Metallurgical Technicum. Zyrianovsk was designated a city in 1941.
