Arys

an acrid lake with salt deposits located in the western part of Betpak-Dala, 140 km northeast of Kzyl-Orda in Kzyl-Orda Oblast, Kazakh SSR. Area, 146 sq km. Lake Arys is fed by sources emerging at the shores and from the bottom of the lake.

a city (until 1956, a settlement) in Chimkent Oblast, Kazakh SSR, located on the left bank of the Arys’ River (a tributary of the Syr Darya). Junction of railroad lines to Orenburg, Tashkent, and Alma-Ata. Population, 30,000 (1967). Arys’ has rail transport enterprises.

The source of the Arys’ is in the Talasskii Alatau and Karatau mountain ranges. The river flows through a plain after emerging from the mountains. In its upper reaches the Arys’ is fed by snow and rain. The average discharge of water near the city of Arys’ is 46.6 cu m per sec, with the greatest flow in April and the least in August. In its lower course the river’s flow is sharply altered by the diversion of water for irrigation. The largest tributaries of the Arys’ are the Mashat, Aksu, Sairamsu, Boraldai, and Badam rivers.
