Quatremère, Étienne Marc

Born July 12, 1782, in Paris; died there Sept. 18, 1857. French Oriental scholar.

In 1815, Quatremère became a member of the Academy of Inscriptions and a professor of Greek literature at the University of Rouen. In 1819 he became a professor of Semitic languages at the Collège de France and later a professor of Persian at the School of Living Oriental Languages. Quatremère is best known for his critical editions of the works of Ibn Khaldun, Rashid ad-Din, and Maqrizi; he also wrote a number of works on his-tory, historical geography, and Eastern literature, particularly the literature of Egypt.
