Arzamit

Arzamit

a chemically stable cement with a base of phenol-formaldehyde resin. To obtain arzamit the following are prepared separately: solution, in which besides the resins (75 percent) are usually included benzyl alcohol (5 percent) and dichloropropanol (20 percent); powder filler (quartz flour, SiO2, BaSO4, or graphite); and solidification accelerators (n-toluenesulfonyl chloride). Before its use, the arzamit solution is thoroughly mixed with the powder. At approximately 20°C arzamit solidifies in 24 hours, at 70°C it solidifies in a few minutes.

Arzamit has high anticorrosive properties and mechanical strength; it is thermostable up to 180°C; it is impermeable to liquids under pressures of up to 0.6 meganewton per m2 (6 kg-force per cm2). Arzamit is used for cementing parts made of phenolic resins and graphite-containing plastics, and as binding material in the lining of chemical apparatus.
