Arzumanian, Anushavan Agafonovich

Born Feb. 14 (27), 1904, in the village of Kavart, Elizavetpol’ Province; died July 18, 1965, in Moscow. Soviet economist and public figure. Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1962). Member of the CPSU from 1923. One of the active members in the Armenian Komsomol.

From 1926 to 1937, Arzumanian was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia. From 1937 to 1952 he was rector at the University of Yerevan and prorector at the University of Azerbaijan. In 1956 he became director of the Institute of World Economics and International Relations at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; in 1962 he became secretary-academician of the Division on Economic Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Arzumanian’s works were devoted to questions of state monopoly capitalism, the crisis of the world capitalist system, the position of the working class, and prospects of the world revolutionary process. In addition, several current problems of the Soviet economy (such as the means of increasing the efficiency of capital investment) are also taken up in Arzumanian’s works. Many of his studies have been translated into foreign languages. Arzumanian was a deputy to the sixth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and five other orders in addition to medals.
