Žyrardów, Strike of 1883

Žyrardów, Strike of (1883)

the first mass strike of Polish workers, which took place at the Žyrardów textile factory in Žyrardów on Apr. 23–28, 1883. The immediate cause of the strike was a reduction in the pay scale. The striking workers of the spool section were joined by 8,000 workers from other departments. Arrests of workers and the shooting of those who tried to free them (three killed, four wounded) did not break the will of the strikers. The strike ended in a workers’ victory: the reduction in wages was can-celled and the strikers were paid for the days on strike.
