Babatag

Babatag

(also Babadag), a mountain range in southern Middle Asia, on the border of the Uzbek SSR and Tadzhik SSR between the Surkhandar’ia and Kafirnigan rivers, right tributaries of the Amu Darya River. The range rises to elevations of up to 2,292 m and is approximately 125 km long. It is composed chiefly of limestones. There is semidesert and moutain-xerophyte vegetation on the slopes, with large areas of pistachio forests. The range is the habitat of the markhor goat, which in the USSR is also encountered on the slopes of the Kugitangtau and Darvaz ranges.
