Bersei, Umar Khapkhalovich

 

Born 1807; year of death unknown. Enlightener of the Adygei people.

Between 1850 and 1860, Bersei taught the Adygei language in the Stavropol’ provincial gymnasium. In 1855 he published Primer of the Circassian Language in Tiflis. In 1858 he compiled an Adygei grammar and in 1861 an Adygei alphabet on the basis of the Russian system. He did translations from Russian and other languages into Adygei. His work proceeded under the influence of progressive Russian social thought.
