Born May 31, 1916, in Holten. Dutch motion-picture director.
Haanstra graduated from an academy of painting and worked as a newspaper photographer. During the fascist German occupation he took part in the resistance movement. He has worked mainly in documentary films. His best works deal with Dutch art, for example, Medieval Dutch Sculpture (1951) and Rembrandt, Painter of Man (1956), as well as life in Holland, for example, Mirror of Holland (1950), And There Was No More Sea (1956), Glass (1958), and Voice of the Water (1967). He has also madefeature films.
