Anticonvulsant one of a group of medicinal preparations having different chemical compositions and capable of preventing or relieving convulsions. Anticonvulsants include a number of substances that act as hypnotics and sedatives, for instance, bromides, chloral hydrate, magnesium sulfate, and phenobarbital.
