BCG vaccine bacille calmette-guérin vaccine, a tuberculosis vaccine containing living, avirulent, bovine-strain tubercle bacilli (Mycobacterium bovis). It may be administered percutaneously by a special technique using a multiple-puncture disk, intracutaneously, or intradermally, and it cannot be given when the patient is reactive to tuberculin, when acute infectious disease is present, or when there is extensive skin disorder. It offers some protection against tuberculosis but cannot be relied on for total control of the disease. In a high percentage of cases the vaccine causes local ulcers at the site of administration. Public health officials in the United States recommend the use of BCG vaccine only for those persons living in communities having a high rate of tuberculosis cases. After vaccination with BCG, the patient will have a positive response to tuberculin tests.
