Arakelian, Babken Nikolaevich

 

Born Feb. 1 (14), 1912, in the village of Gecherlu, Echmiadzin District. Soviet archaeologist and historian. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (1968). Member of the CPSU since 1940.

Arakelian has been director of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR since 1959. He is a specialist on the history and culture of ancient and medieval Armenia. Under his direction, excavations are being conducted at Garni (since 1949) and Armavir (since 1962), which have provided rich material for characterizing the ancient Armenian culture. Arakelian has been awarded three orders and various medals.
