(bī-op'ter-in), A pterin found in yeast, the fruit fly, and in normal human urine. The reduced form of biopterin serves as a coenzyme for a number of enzyme-catalyzed reactions.

An enzyme cofactor which is an oxidised degradation product of tetrahydrobiopterin, and involved in oxidation-reduction reactions.

biopterin

(bī-ŏp′tĕr-ĭn) 2-amino-4-hydroxy-6-(1,2-hydroxypropyl) pteridine, important in metabolizing phenylalanine. A deficiency of biopterin is a rare cause of phenylketonuria.
